Original Lithograph on Arches wove paper; Unsigned. Printed by Mourlot, published by Tériade, Paris. Reference: Mourlot 330, Cramer 46. Marc Chagall’s Sacrifices Made to the Nymphs, from Daphnis and Chloe (1961), is a colour lithograph on Arches paper that weaves mythological narrative with a dreamlike visual language. Figures gather in ritual gestures around a central sacrificial scene, where a vivid red animal contrasts against a softly textured field of pastel hues. Floating figures above and groups to the side create a sense of layered storytelling, while delicate lines and diffused color evoke both movement and atmosphere. Printed by Mourlot and published by Tériade, the work exemplifies Chagall’s poetic interpretation of classical themes through memory and imagination.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
