Hand signed lower right. Printed by Mourlot, Paris. Published by André Suaret, Paris. Reference Cramer 43 Mourlot 288. Marc Chagall’s Der Engel (The Angel) (1960) is a lithograph that embodies his poetic and dreamlike visual language. Printed by Mourlot in Paris, the composition unfolds in a nocturnal, expressive scene where a luminous figure merges with animal and vegetal forms. A winged presence appears intertwined with a goat-like creature, set against a dark, textured background punctuated by a radiant yellow sun or moon. Chagall’s fluid lines and layered washes of blue, green, and black create a sense of movement and spiritual ambiguity. The imagery suggests themes of transformation, folklore, and the coexistence of the earthly and the divine, characteristic of his symbolic universe.

What is Cubism?
Cubism is an art movement that aimed to depict multiple perspectives of objects or figures within a single picture. Artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso pioneered this style around 1907. The name Cubism emerged from their use of geometric shapes and outlines that often resembled cubes, breaking objects down into abstracted forms.
