5 towers in various dimensions - spray painted wooden blocks // Modern Towers by Julian Opie is a contemporary sculpture composed of five wooden blocks, each painted to resemble high-rise buildings. Created in 2018 as part of a limited edition of 20, the towers are spray-painted with precise lines and geometric patterns to evoke the glass facades and reflective surfaces typical of urban skyscrapers. The piece varies in dimensions, with each tower standing independently yet forming a cohesive cityscape when viewed together. Opie’s minimalist style transforms these simple wooden blocks into a stylized representation of modern architecture, capturing the essence of a bustling cityscape in a compact, almost playful form. The largest block reaches 32 cm in height, with each tower approximately 6.5 cm in width and depth, making it an accessible yet dynamic exploration of urban life.

What is new British Sculpture?

New British Sculpture is the name referring to the work produced by a group of sculptors, installation artists, and other creators who exhibited together in London during the 1980s. This group included artists like Richard Deacon, Richard Wentworth, and Tony Cragg. Tim Woods helped define this movement by identifying four major themes: the blending of kitsch and pop culture, the use of UK urban waste in a bricolage style, the assignment of new meanings to everyday objects, and a playful approach using wit and humor.
