Enrico Baj's Mic-Mac, danseus mecanique collage featuring a colorful mechanical figure in a dancing pose, constructed from toy-like geometric shapes.

Collage on paper // Mic-Mac, danseus mecanique by Enrico Baj, created in 2001, is a limited edition collage that exhibits the artist's playful and whimsical approach to art. Measuring 50 x 40 cm, the artwork features a mechanical figure, assembled from shapes resembling the pieces of a construction kit or toy. The figure appears to be in motion, striking a dynamic, dance-like pose. The collage employs bright colors, such as red, yellow, green, and black, to create contrast against the metallic grey framework that forms the figure’s body. Baj’s use of geometric shapes and vibrant colors reflects his fascination with mechanized forms and his satirical take on automation and the modern world. The artwork’s lively, animated style invites viewers to engage with its humorous and inventive visual language.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
