// Carlos Cruz-Diez’s Induction Chromatique à Double Fréquence, Série Orinoco 3, from 2018, is an exploration of optical movement and color vibration that immerses the viewer in a dynamic visual experience. This limited edition lithograph, with only 75 copies, features vertical stripes in a vibrant spectrum of greens, blues, reds, and yellows that seem to shimmer and shift as the viewer’s perspective changes. The repetitive pattern and finely graded color transitions create a pulsing, wave-like effect, making the colors appear to oscillate and vibrate across the composition. Cruz-Diez, a master of kinetic and optical art, uses these elements to explore the independent life of color, engaging the viewer in an interactive encounter with the artwork. This piece captures the artist’s dedication to challenging traditional perceptions of static art, transforming color and form into a continuous, evolving experience.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
