Induction Chromatique a double fréquence Série Orinoco 1

Carlos Cruz-Diez's Induction Chromatique à Double Fréquence, Série Orinoco 2, 2018, lithograph with vertical stripes in soft greens, yellows, and blues creating optical movement.

// Carlos Cruz-Diez’s Induction Chromatique à Double Fréquence, Série Orinoco 2, a 2018 limited edition lithograph, exemplifies his exploration of kinetic art and optical illusion. Limited to just 75 prints, this piece features vertical bands in soft shades of green, yellow, and blue. The meticulously arranged lines create a mesmerizing effect that seems to oscillate and move as viewers adjust their angle or distance from the artwork. Through subtle color transitions and precision in spacing, Cruz-Diez crafts a sense of depth and motion, making static color lines appear dynamic and alive. This piece invites an interactive viewing experience, challenging perception and drawing attention to the fluidity and independence of color. It underscores Cruz-Diez's belief in color as an evolving phenomenon, one that engages the observer in a constantly shifting visual encounter.

What is kinetic art?

Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
