ceramic plate, signed and numbered at the back. // Céramique #1 by Carlos Cruz-Diez, created in 2008, is a ceramic sculpture that embodies the artist’s exploration of color, movement, and perception through optical effects. The piece consists of a ceramic plate adorned with vertical stripes in vibrant red, blue, and black. These lines are arranged to create a moiré-like effect, causing an illusion of movement as the viewer shifts perspective. The central section of the artwork appears to recede, adding a sense of depth and dimensionality that invites viewers to interact visually with the piece. Measuring 40 x 40 x 4 cm, this limited edition work, part of an edition of 8 with additional artist proofs, is signed and numbered on the back, showcasing Cruz-Diez's innovative approach to kinetic art and color theory.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
