Handcoloured etching. // This atmospheric handcoloured etching by Atsushi Kaga captures Usacchi the rabbit in a moment of surprise as a flashlight tumbles from grasp, its beam cutting through darkness. The falling light becomes a metaphor for the loss of certainty and the vulnerability of navigating unknown territory — themes that resonate deeply in Kaga's autobiographical work. The hand-colouring adds warm tonalities that soften the dramatic contrast between illumination and shadow, creating an image both startling and tender. A compelling addition to the artist's 2025 Usacchi series exploring moments of sudden awareness and gentle revelation.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
