Inspiré par la culture de rue de New York dans les années 1980, Keith Haring a été acclamé pour son travail de type Pop Art et Graffiti qui a été décrit comme un langage visuel - le travail de Haring était souvent spontané et créé dans les métros sur des fonds noirs vierges. Haring était politiquement et socialement motivé et a utilisé son art pour commenter des problèmes profondément enracinés dans la ville tels que la consommation de drogue, les sous-cultures, les guerres et le SIDA - Rebel with Many Causes est l'une de ses œuvres les plus populaires et commente l'ignorance et l'évitement relatif au SIDA en dépeignant un thème « n'entendez pas le mal, ne voyez pas le mal, ne parlez pas du mal » tout au long de la pièce. Des artistes tels que Basquiat et Warhol ont été parmi les influences de Haring, aux côtés de l'auteur de Beat William Burroughs, avec qui Haring a collaboré sur une autre pièce liée au SIDA. Des peintures murales colorées et des motifs reconnaissables ont été largement utilisés dans le travail de Haring - en tant qu'artiste du métro, il taguait souvent son travail avec « Radiant Child », une représentation d'un bébé rampant émettant des rayons de lumière.
