Mel Bochner

Original Signed Artworks & Limited Edition Prints For Sale

Regarded as one of the most influential and successful pioneers of Conceptual art, Mel Bochner analyses the relationship between language and physical space and colour through his text-based paintings – examples of his work include the display of expletives and derogatory words in soft, pastel tones such as pink, while writing complimentary words in a sludgy brown or soiled black to elicit subverted feelings within his audience.

« I can see where I’ve really accomplished something
or where I didn’t quite make it. »

Mel Bochner
One of Bochner’s most celebrated works is a series of thesaurus-based paintings featuring a wall full of synonyms for one word, created with the intention of inspiring a viewer to think about the language that they use and the meaning that words can hold.

« The viewer should enter the idea through a visual or phenomenological experience rather than simply reading it. »
Mel Bochner

Bochner has been incredibly vocal about his need to use a range of different materials and approaches throughout his career as a means of fulfilling his expression and creativity; he explained this in detail in an essay titled "The Medium and the Tedium." (Artist website)

What is Generative Art?

What is Generative Art?

It refers to art wholly or partly created through a special autonomous system. In this context, the autonomous system can be an independent or a non human one, capable of determining its features that would otherwise be determined by the artist. The generative system can take the creator's role or his artistic creator. Generative art is often used to refer to the algorithmically computer generated work.
