Ruff, Thomas | Tripe_08 (Pugahm Myo. Thapinyu Pagoda), 2018 — available on Composition Gallery
Edition of 50 - Inkjet on Rag Photographique Paper - Signed, dated and numbered on the reverse - In pristine condition - Presented in a portfolio with text by Thomas Ruff and Martin Barnes, Senior curator, Photographs, V&A
Thomas Ruff's Tripe_08 (Pugahm Myo. Thapinyu Pagoda) from 2018 captures a hauntingly beautiful image of the Thapinyu Pagoda in Pugahm Myo. This inkjet print, measuring 40 by 50 cm, is printed on Rag Photographique Paper, which enhances the ethereal quality of the composition. The pagoda appears to emerge from a misty landscape, surrounded by vegetation under a softly diffused sky, giving the image a timeless, almost ghostly presence. Ruff’s choice of muted tones and delicate details reflects his exploration of historical architecture through a contemporary lens, echoing the aesthetic of early photography. Limited to an edition of 50, each print is signed, dated, and numbered on the reverse, making it a contemplative tribute to both the beauty and mystery of ancient structures.

What is the Dusseldorf school of photography?

The Düsseldorf School of Photography refers to a group of photographers who studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf during the 1970s. This group was known for its devotion to the black-and-white industrial images characteristic of the German tradition known as New Objectivity. The photographers focused on precise, methodical documentation of industrial structures, often using a detached and objective approach.
