Sean Scully – Liliane 5, 2010 – Etching and Aquatint
Aquatint with sugarlift, spitbite and hard-ground etching. Somerset Textured White 300 gsm paper. Image dimensions: 61 × 46 cm. Sheet dimensions: 86 × 71 cm. Initialed, dated, and numbered in pencil.
Liliane 5 stages a dramatic confrontation between warm salmon and deep red in the upper register, split vertically on a black field, and white with dark navy horizontal bands resting on grey below. The contrast between the heated upper panel and the cool restraint beneath generates one of the most emotionally charged pairings in the Liliane series. Scully's aquatint with sugarlift and hard-ground etching on Somerset paper produces surfaces of remarkable tactile presence. From an edition of 40, this 2010 diptych embodies the artist's lifelong investigation of colour as a vessel for deeply felt human experience.

What is geometric abstract art?

What is geometric abstract art?

Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art that uses geometric shapes arranged in a non-illusionistic space (though not always) and combined into non-representational (non-objective) compositions. Based on years of artistic research, some artists have proposed that geometric abstraction offers a solution to modern challenges by rejecting traditional illusionistic practices in favor of clarity and simplicity.
