Sean SCULLY | Liliane 5 | Etching and Aquatint, 2010 — available on Composition Gallery

Aquatint with sugarlift, spitbite and hard-ground etching. Somerset Textured White 300 gsm paper. Image dimensions: 61 × 46 cm. Sheet dimensions: 86 × 71 cm. Initialed, dated, and numbered in pencil. // Liliane 5 stages a dramatic confrontation between warm salmon and deep red in the upper register, split vertically on a black field, and white with dark navy horizontal bands resting on grey below. The contrast between the heated upper panel and the cool restraint beneath generates one of the most emotionally charged pairings in the Liliane series. Scully's aquatint with sugarlift and hard-ground etching on Somerset paper produces surfaces of remarkable tactile presence. From an edition of 40, this 2010 diptych embodies the artist's lifelong investigation of colour as a vessel for deeply felt human experience.

What is Colour Field Painting?

Colour Field Painting is an abstract style characterized by large areas of a single color or simple, solid colors. The term was first used in the 1950s to describe the work of three American Abstract Expressionist painters—Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. Their work emphasized the emotional power of color and the creation of vast, meditative spaces through expansive color fields.
