Oil crayon on paper. Hand-signed by the artist. // This politically charged oil-crayon drawing by Roberto Matta from 1962 unleashes a turbulent vision of mechanised violence — firing weapons radiate jagged lines of force while fragmented human-machine hybrids writhe across the sheet in greens and muted earth tones. Handwritten text at the bottom anchors the surrealist composition in the atmosphere of Cold War confrontation. Created at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the work channels Matta's unique position between Surrealism and social protest, transforming personal anxiety into a universal indictment of militarised power through hallucinatory draughtsmanship.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
