// Roberto Matta's Octravi (1974–1975) is a vibrant lithograph that blends surrealist abstraction with dynamic, geometric forms. The composition features a complex array of shapes, including rectangles, lines, and organic forms, which appear to float against a rich, blue background. Bold yellow elements punctuate the scene, creating a striking contrast and adding depth to the spatial arrangement. Matta’s use of bright colors and fluid lines infuses the artwork with a sense of movement, as if the forms are caught in an evolving, dreamlike environment. This piece exemplifies Matta's exploration of inner psychological landscapes, merging the abstract with the subconscious.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
