A group of 3 mixed media prints in colors with collage on handmade and heavy board paper. Each signed in pencil, dated and numbered, each with the blindstamp of the printer, Styria Studio, New York. One sheet 15 3/8 x 11in (39.1 x 27.9cm). Two sheets 21 3/8 x 8in (54.3 x 20.3cm). Robert Rauschenberg’s Three plates, from Shirtboards Morocco, Italy '52 Portfolio (1991) is a group of mixed media prints that exemplifies the artist’s pioneering approach to combining imagery, materials, and memory. Each composition is constructed on handmade board with collaged elements, fragments of printed images, and subtle interventions that blur the boundary between printmaking and assemblage. Sparse visual details—such as isolated faces, mechanical diagrams, and textured additions—are set against largely open surfaces, emphasizing absence as much as presence. The vertical formats enhance a sense of fragmentation and narrative discontinuity. Drawing on earlier travels referenced in the portfolio’s title, the works reflect Rauschenberg’s interest in layering time, place, and perception into a quiet yet complex visual language.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
