-Aquatint, lift-ground etching and aquatint -Signed by the artist in pencil, and numbered // The Wanderers by Robert Motherwell, created in 1985, is a limited edition print produced using lift-ground etching and aquatint. This bold composition features four abstracted forms rendered in thick, expressive black lines against a muted background, evoking a sense of movement or migration. The piece’s rough, organic shapes convey a primal, almost haunting quality, characteristic of Motherwell’s work, which often explores themes of existentialism and the human condition. Signed and numbered by the artist, The Wanderers is an evocative study of form and contrast, using the simplicity of black and beige to invite reflection on themes of journeying and displacement.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
