Richard Tuttle is a post-minimalist artist, specializing in intimate works that employ the use of scale, line and often watercolour. Initially inspired by the outputs of minimalism, Tuttle’s earliest works focussed on hand-made, delicate pieces - including small monochrome collections and paper cubes featuring cut-out designs - small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. Throughout his career, he has made use of several different mediums including paper, tin and canvases, the latter often dyed a range of different colours. His most famous works include the 5 Loose Leaf Notebook Drawings - a series of minimalistic, abstract paintings in watercolour – and his Wire Pieces, which finely showcases his use of aforementioned scale and line. Tuttle is also celebrated for his ability to bring together different mediums, as displayed in his recognized wall-bound works that bring together sculpture, painting and fabrics – I Don’t Know is one of his most notable works of this kind and is in stark contrast to the miniature scale of his usual outputs.
