Screenprint in colours with silver ink // Miles Aldridge's Venus Etcetera (after Cabanel) is a limited edition screen print created in 2022. The piece reinterprets classical art through a contemporary, surreal lens, drawing inspiration from Alexandre Cabanel’s The Birth of Venus. Aldridge’s work places a modern, doll-like figure in a brightly colored, retro bathroom, blending soft pastels and vibrant hues. The woman, dressed in a delicate pink nightgown, stands in a vintage bathtub surrounded by playful objects like a rubber duck and beauty products, creating a juxtaposition between innocence and artificiality. The vivid colors, detailed textures, and pop-art influence give the image a dreamlike, cinematic quality.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
