Miles Aldridge Venus Etcetera screen print; retro TV showing a blue-tinted woman, surrounded by roses and vintage objects.

Screenprint in colours with silver ink // Miles Aldridge's Venus Etcetera (after Botticelli) is a limited edition screen print created in 2022. The artwork reimagines Botticelli's classic The Birth of Venus through a contemporary, retro lens. Displayed on an old television set, the image of a woman echoes the elegance and poise of Botticelli's Venus, yet the monochromatic blue tint and modern surroundings add a surreal, cinematic quality. Surrounding the TV, objects like pink roses, a drink glass, and a vintage lamp create a nostalgic, pop-culture atmosphere, blending high art with everyday kitsch. Aldridge’s use of color and silver ink enhances the glamour and allure of this contemporary take on a timeless icon.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
