Venus Etcetera (after Velázquez)

Miles Aldridge's New Utopias #4, 2018 screen print, woman in yellow cutting ham with electric knife against pink background.

Screenprint in colours with silver ink // New Utopias #4 by Miles Aldridge, created in 2018, is a vividly colored screen print that encapsulates a surreal take on 1950s domesticity. The image features a woman dressed in bright yellow, her smile wide and hair perfectly coiffed in a retro style, as she uses an electric knife to carve a ham. Set against a pink background with a red-and-white checkered tablecloth and a clock on the wall, the scene exudes an unsettling perfection. Aldridge’s use of saturated colors and hyper-stylized composition brings a sense of artificiality, casting a critical eye on ideals of domestic bliss and societal expectations. The addition of silver ink enhances the glossy, almost plastic-like quality, highlighting the contrast between surface beauty and underlying tension.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
