Original lithograph printed in colors on wove paper bearing the Arches script watermark. Edition of 50, numbered in pencil lower left (10 additional artist’s proofs on Japan paper numbered in Roman numerals). Published by Editions Maeght, Paris; printed at Atelier Fernand Mourlot, Paris. Sheet size: 75.6 x 53.5 cm (29 3/4 x 21 1/16 in) Image size: 61.6 x 44.5 cm (24 1/4 x 17 1/2 in) Frame size: 101.6 x 81.3 x 3.8 cm (40 x 32 x 1 1/2 in)// Self Portrait is an introspective colour lithograph in which Chagall portrays himself in the act of artistic creation, surrounded by the dreamlike imagery that defined his visual universe. The artist's face emerges from a soft wash of colour, flanked by floating bouquets, fantastical creatures, and the beloved motifs of his native Vitebsk — all rendered with the lyrical line and chromatic tenderness that distinguish his late graphic work. This autobiographical print, issued in an edition of fifty on wove paper bearing the Arches script watermark, offers a rare window into the artist's self-conception in his late eighties, still vitally creative and deeply connected to the poetic iconography that made him one of the most universally loved painters of the twentieth century.

What is Cubism?
Cubism is an art movement that aimed to depict multiple perspectives of objects or figures within a single picture. Artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso pioneered this style around 1907. The name Cubism emerged from their use of geometric shapes and outlines that often resembled cubes, breaking objects down into abstracted forms.
