The scene depicts the dramatic abduction of Chloe by raiders from Methymna, rendered in Chagall's fluid, emotionally charged chromatic language — warm reds, ochres, and greens that convey both the violence of the moment and the pastoral tenderness of the ancient Greek romance. This extremely rare proof impression, apart from the book edition of two hundred and fifty plus twenty hors commerce, offers the lithograph's full colour intensity on individual Arches wove paper rather than bound within the volume. The Daphnis and Chloe series is widely regarded as one of the finest sets of original lithographs ever published.
