Manolo Valdés Reina Mariana VIII etching and collage depicting abstracted royal figure with blue textured collage elements

Etching and collage. Manolo Valdés’ Reina Mariana VIII (2000) is a large-scale etching and collage that reinterprets one of the most iconic figures in Spanish art history: Queen Mariana of Austria, famously portrayed by Diego Velázquez. Rather than reproducing the historical image, Valdés reduces the royal portrait to a network of sweeping lines, geometric structures, and fragmented forms. Areas of richly textured blue and ochre collage punctuate the composition, introducing material depth and contemporary energy. Throughout his career, Valdés has revisited masterpieces of Spanish painting, transforming familiar images into modern reflections on memory, cultural identity, and artistic tradition. In Reina Mariana VIII, the monumental scale and sparse linear construction create a compelling dialogue between presence and absence, allowing a recognizable historical figure to emerge through abstraction and suggestion.
