Manolo Valdés – Mujer con periodico - Warhol, 2012 – Collage

Etching and collage.

'Mujer con periodico - Warhol' by Manolo Valdés is a collage measuring 60 × 48 cm, combining gestural drawing, flat graphic colour, and newspaper print. A woman in a wide-brimmed black hat, rendered in loose brushwork against a saturated orange ground, holds open a spread from the German financial daily Handelsblatt. Visible within the newspaper pages is a reproduction of a Warhol portrait — a direct quotation that anchors the work's central strategy. Valdés, who co-founded the Valencia collective Equipo Crónica in the 1960s as a challenge to European Informel abstraction, has long described his method as assembling 'building blocks from history into a new narrative.' Here that approach is literal: fragments of art-world media — auction reports, critical text, reproduced images — become both the subject and the physical material of the piece.
