Published in 1971 by Editions Georges Visat, Paris, in an edition of 99 plus 20 HC. Literature: L. Anselmino, 'Man Ray Opera Grafica', Turin 1973, vol. I, cat. no. 29E // Man Ray's Cactus (1969) is an aquatint limited edition print that exemplifies his affinity for bold abstract forms. The print features a series of vertical, elongated yellow shapes with jagged green accents, resembling the spines of a cactus, against a stark black background. This composition merges geometric abstraction with organic elements, displaying Man Ray’s unique visual language that draws from Dadaist and Surrealist influences. The color contrast between the bright yellow and deep black adds drama to the piece, while the green detailing provides a natural texture, inviting viewers to reflect on the relationship between form and nature. Originally published in 1971 by Editions Georges Visat, Paris, the print measures 61.5 x 45 cm and was produced in an edition of 99 with 20 additional HC (Hors Commerce) prints.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
