Original Etching and aquatint in colors with hand-coloring on Pescia Italia paper // James Rosenquist's Swing Screen (1976) is a limited edition etching and aquatint print that demonstrates the artist's skill in blending elements of popular culture with surrealism. Printed on Pescia Italia paper, the artwork measures 43.2 x 88.9 cm and features a dynamic composition filled with vibrant colors, fragmented shapes, and overlapping forms. The piece is divided into three distinct sections: a circular form with red and blue hues on the left, a dark green organic shape in the center, and a geometric triangle outline on the right. The juxtaposition of these elements, combined with hand-coloring, creates a sense of movement and depth. Rosenquist’s innovative use of etching and aquatint techniques adds texture and visual intrigue, encouraging viewers to explore the interplay of color, form, and abstraction.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
