Star Ladder (Second State), 1978 - Signed, numbered, dated and titled on recto - Published by Aripeka - Image: 17.5 x 35.6 inches; Framed // Star Ladder (Second State) by James Rosenquist is a lithograph created in 1978, with an edition limited to 78. Known for his background in pop art, Rosenquist brings a unique blend of abstraction and symbolism to this piece. The composition presents a surreal and fragmented scene: a detailed bird form perches on an angular structure, while a radiating, star-like form occupies the center. To the right, layered lines and textures create a sense of chaotic energy, juxtaposing the precision of the bird and star forms. This work reflects Rosenquist’s exploration of complex visual narratives, blending elements that evoke both industrial and organic imagery. Star Ladder invites viewers to interpret themes of ascent, transformation, and the interplay between order and disorder.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
