1-color etching, aquatint with pochoirs, printed on Pescia Italia. Signed by the artist. // Hot Lake by James Rosenquist, created in 1978, is a large, vibrant etching and aquatint with pochoirs, measuring an impressive 114.3 cm by 230.6 cm. This limited edition print, part of an edition of 78, is signed by the artist and printed on Pescia Italia paper. The composition features a blend of surreal and abstract elements: a radiant, sun-like burst on the left in shades of pink and yellow, a rainbow-striped structure resembling a fragmented house in the center, and swirling arcs of color punctuated by speckles on the right. Rosenquist’s work often plays with elements of pop art, yet Hot Lake ventures into a dreamlike, almost cosmic realm, evoking themes of heat, light, and transformation. The explosive colors and layered forms create a dynamic visual experience that engages the viewer with its energy and scale.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
