Dead End III (from Rusty Signs)

Ed Ruscha's Dead End II, 2014 mixographia print, mimics a rusted street sign with bold block letters spelling DEAD END, emphasizing texture and decay.

Mixographia print on handmade paper // Dead End II (from Rusty Signs) by Ed Ruscha, created in 2014, is part of his Rusty Signs series and is a mixographia print on handmade paper. The piece mimics the texture and look of a corroded metal sign, with the bold text DEAD END prominently displayed in embossed, block-style letters. The rusty, weathered surface enhances the piece’s rugged aesthetic, giving it an aged and industrial feel that evokes the appearance of an abandoned street sign. The distressed, tactile quality of the work reflects Ruscha’s interest in transforming ordinary, utilitarian objects into pieces of art that challenge perceptions of language and commercial iconography. Limited to 50 editions with 10 artist’s proofs, this print highlights Ruscha’s ability to explore themes of time, decay, and the power of simple phrases through a unique blend of text and material.

What is New Topographics?

New Topographics is a term coined in 1975 by curator William Jenkins to describe a group of photographers whose work focused on formal black-and-white images of urban and industrial landscapes. Jenkins initially described their aesthetic as banal, but the photographers themselves argued that their compositions were as significant as those of natural landscapes, emphasizing the beauty in everyday, man-made environments.
