Untitled G (Dick Exhibition)

Daniel Richter's Untitled I, 2016-2017 silkscreen with surreal street scene featuring a dark, dripping figure above a shop.

// Untitled I by Daniel Richter is a 2016-2017 silkscreen print that uses a minimalist, cartoon-like style to deliver a surreal and unsettling scene. The artwork depicts a figure in dark silhouette, dripping down from the upper left, suspended above a storefront labeled Au Bon Homme (The Good Man) with a selection of goods visible in the window. Below, another character points up at the figure with a seemingly accusatory or alarmed gesture, while a small group of onlookers gazes on, bemused or indifferent. The scene’s stark black-and-white lines against a pale blue background create an eerie atmosphere, blending humor with discomfort. Richter’s work often explores the absurd and the uncanny, and here, he invites viewers to interpret the juxtaposition of everyday urban life with an unsettling, mysterious presence, provoking questions about society’s response to disturbance and otherness.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
