Daniel Richter's Untitled G (I Swear I Didn't Do It), 2016-2017 silkscreen with cartoon figure and decaying green building, exploring guilt and denial.

// Untitled G (I Swear I Didn't Do It) by Daniel Richter is a 2016-2017 silkscreen print that combines a surreal cartoon character with an eerie, urban landscape, creating a piece that is both humorous and unsettling. The artwork features a green-toned image of a decaying building, setting a bleak and desolate atmosphere. In the foreground, a bright red cartoonish figure with exaggerated features stands with an expression of worry or guilt, proclaiming, I SWEAR TO GOD I DIDN'T DO IT in a speech bubble. This juxtaposition of cartoon innocence with the ominous setting suggests themes of denial, guilt, and the absurdity of self-justification. Richter's work here merges pop culture aesthetics with social commentary, inviting viewers to explore the humor and discomfort in narratives of innocence and blame within a decaying world.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
