Cataloging number: 330. Listed on page 202 of Tàpies. Graphic work. 1947-1972. Editorial Gustavo Gili. 1973 // Taches et Chiffres 1 by Antoni Tàpies, created in 1972, combines lithography and etching to produce an expressive and layered composition. This piece features a striking contrast of deep red shapes across a textured black and gray background. A bold, abstract red form stretches horizontally, almost resembling a bridge or crossbar, while cryptic symbols and numbers are scattered around, inviting contemplation on their meaning. The background’s texture, with rough, almost scraped layers, adds depth and evokes a sense of erosion or wear, enhancing the raw and tactile quality of the work. Printed on Arches paper, this mixed-media lithograph reflects Tàpies' exploration of materials and abstract symbolism, creating a piece that feels both enigmatic and grounded. Limited to 75 signed and numbered copies, Taches et Chiffres 1 stands as a testament to Tàpies' ability to evoke emotion through minimalistic yet powerful visuals.

What is Tachisme?
Tachisme is a French abstract painting style that gained popularity between 1940 and 1950, often seen as the European counterpart to Abstract Expressionism. However, there are stylistic differences between the two. Tachisme, which emerged from Art Informel, rejected geometric abstraction in favor of more intuitive and spontaneous expression. It was a reaction against the structured forms of Cubism and is closely related to Informalism. Tachisme emphasizes gestural brushwork, irregular forms, and a focus on the process of painting itself.
