Etching / Aquatint / carborundum // Antoni Tàpies' Quatre rius de sang (Four Rivers of Blood), a limited edition etching with aquatint and carborundum from 1972, exemplifies his masterful use of abstract forms and symbolic color. The composition is dominated by four bold, vertical red strokes, representing the titular rivers of blood, cutting across a thick horizontal yellow band. These elements create a striking contrast between the deep red and vibrant yellow, imbuing the piece with a sense of urgency and tension. The background features subtle inscriptions and sketch-like markings, typical of Tàpies' interest in blending the material and the metaphysical. The use of carborundum adds a textural dimension to the work, heightening its physicality. This piece reflects Tàpies' exploration of themes like violence, history, and the human condition, combining abstract forms with deep symbolic meaning.

What is Tachisme?
Tachisme is a French abstract painting style that gained popularity between 1940 and 1950, often seen as the European counterpart to Abstract Expressionism. However, there are stylistic differences between the two. Tachisme, which emerged from Art Informel, rejected geometric abstraction in favor of more intuitive and spontaneous expression. It was a reaction against the structured forms of Cubism and is closely related to Informalism. Tachisme emphasizes gestural brushwork, irregular forms, and a focus on the process of painting itself.
