Agnes Martin Untitled 9 lithograph on vellum with wide pale horizontal bands in soft earthy tones and subtle tonal variation

Lithograph on vellum parchment; - Unsigned and unnumbered; - Published by Nemela & Lenzen GmbH, Monchengladback and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam for Agnes Martin's 1991 retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum. Untitled 9 by Agnes Martin is a 1991 lithograph on vellum parchment, created for her retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum. This work consists of a series of broad horizontal bands in pale, earthy tones, subtly differentiated in texture and hue. Unlike Martin’s more line-focused pieces, this composition leans toward atmospheric abstraction, evoking qualities of aged paper, light, and calmness. The quiet divisions between bands create a visual rhythm that suggests openness and meditative space. Issued in an edition of 2500, the piece exemplifies Martin’s deep sensitivity to nuance, silence, and the emotive power of simplicity.

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
