Lithograph on Arches paper - Signed by the artist and numbered - From the suite that illustrates writer Gabriel García Márquez's book "El último viaje del buque fantasma". - Referenced in the catalogue raisonné "Wifredo Lam, Oeuvre gravé et lithographié", by D. Tonneau-Ryckelynck (Musée de Gravelines, 1994). // Wifredo Lam's 'El último viaje del buque fantasma VI' is a lithograph from 1976 that forms part of a series created to illustrate Gabriel García Márquez's book 'El último viaje del buque fantasma'. The artwork features a central red, abstracted form that resembles a surreal, mechanical figure or ship, with multiple protruding arrows and geometric elements. The background consists of soft beige tones, creating a striking contrast with the bold, red structure. The minimalistic yet powerful design evokes a sense of movement and mystery, reflecting the fantastical and enigmatic themes present in García Márquez’s literature. Lam’s use of simple lines and organic shapes draws attention to the symbolic and dreamlike qualities of the imagery, blending modern abstraction with spiritual and cultural references.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
