Lithography // Wifredo Lam's The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship 1, a lithograph from 1976, illustrates his unique blend of Afro-Cuban symbolism and Surrealism. The artwork features a stylized, almost skeletal figure resembling both a ship and an abstract creature, rendered in deep red tones against a beige backdrop. The bold, linear forms and organic curves evoke a sense of motion and mystery, reminiscent of Lam’s exploration of mythological and spiritual themes. The composition, with its angular and fluid shapes, suggests a narrative of transformation and journey, inviting viewers to delve into the deeper meanings behind its forms.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
