(sheet) // Contre une maison sèche (dark) by Wifredo Lam, created in 1977, is an etching and aquatint that exemplifies the artist’s signature surrealist style. The composition is populated with elongated, abstract forms that evoke a sense of movement and tension, perhaps symbolizing mystical creatures or spirits. The monochromatic tones and sharp, angular lines create an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere, aligning with Lam's exploration of Afro-Cuban mythology and themes of transformation. This piece reflects Lam’s fusion of surrealism with cultural symbolism, inviting viewers into a dreamlike realm populated by enigmatic figures and shadowy shapes.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
