'White Origami' by Rosemarie Trockel is an offset print composed of three distinct photographic elements arranged on a white ground. At the centre, a crumpled length of Glen plaid fabric — rendered in close-up black-and-white — dominates the sheet, its folds creating a torso-like silhouette. To the lower left, a smaller snapshot shows a heavyset man in white clothing standing with his back to the camera, looking out over water. Behind both images, the white paper is scored and folded into angular geometric cuts, lending the composition a three-dimensional quality. Trockel, who emerged from the male-dominated Mülheimer Freiheit milieu in Cologne while consistently foregrounding feminist critique, frequently uses pattern, textile and the photographic fragment to question the hierarchies embedded in both aesthetics and everyday objects. The Glen plaid — a fabric coded by class and gender — pressed into a body-shaped crumple, and placed alongside an anonymous rear-view figure, carries that interrogation into the language of print.
