'The American Four' by Robert Indiana is a screen-print from 1970 measuring 67 × 66.7 cm. A large numeral four dominates the composition, rendered in flat red and blue against an off-white ground — colours drawn directly from the American flag. The blue fills two angular, geometric sections in the upper half, divided by a sharp diagonal; the red anchors the lower register in two rectangular blocks with quarter-circle cutouts. Indiana, a central figure in American Pop art, consistently used numbers, words, and commercial graphic vernacular as vehicles for social and political commentary. Made during the Vietnam War era, this work belongs to a body of protest-oriented prints in which Indiana appropriated the visual language of signage and mass communication to address American identity. The hand-numbered edition is pencil-signed in the lower margin.

What is art fabrication?
Art Fabrication is a process used in the production of technically challenging or large-scale artworks. It occurs when a designer or artist is unable to fully realize their concept or design on their own and seeks assistance from a fabrication studio. These studios are equipped with specialized machinery, resources, and skilled labor necessary to execute complex art projects to a high standard.
