Softground etching with drypoint on Rives BFK paper - Published by Crown Point Press, San Francisco - Plate: 45.4 by 60 cm 17 by 23 in; Sheet: 67 by 102 cm 26 by 40¼ in // Richard Diebenkorn's Two Way (1982) is an etching that blends softground and drypoint techniques to create a delicate yet structured composition. Executed on Rives BFK paper, the work features a series of overlapping lines and geometric shapes, suggesting both architectural forms and abstract spatial relationships. A heavy black border encloses subtle linear elements and faint marks, evoking a sense of containment and openness simultaneously. The restrained palette and minimalist form exemplify Diebenkorn’s fascination with balance and spatial dynamics, as seen in his Ocean Park series. Published by Crown Point Press, San Francisco, the print’s clean, linear aesthetic invites viewers to explore its quiet complexity.

What is Bay Area Figurative Art ?
The Bay Area Figurative Movement, which also goes by the names Bay Area Figurative School, Bay Area Figurative Art, or Bay Area Figuration, came to existence in San-Francisco Bay Area. This was in the mid-20th century, when a group of artists from the area stopped working on the then popular Abstract Expressionism for a preference to figuration in painting. The movement lasted a total of two decades during the 1950's and 1960's.
