Color aquatint, spit bite aquatint, hard ground etching, and drypoint with scraping // Richard Diebenkorn, Green Tree Spade is a mixed-media print created in 1982 using a combination of color aquatint, spit bite aquatint, hard ground etching, and drypoint with scraping. The artwork features an abstract, tree-like form in shades of green, framed by bold, dark outlines. The top of the image is defined by a blue horizontal stripe, which contrasts with the more organic, freeform shapes below. The textured interior of the green form adds depth and complexity to the composition, while the dark lines emphasize structure and movement. This print is part of a limited edition of 35 and showcases Diebenkorn's mastery in blending abstract expressionism with elements of figuration, offering a visually intriguing balance between spontaneity and control.

What is Bay Area Figurative Art ?
The Bay Area Figurative Movement, which also goes by the names Bay Area Figurative School, Bay Area Figurative Art, or Bay Area Figuration, came to existence in San-Francisco Bay Area. This was in the mid-20th century, when a group of artists from the area stopped working on the then popular Abstract Expressionism for a preference to figuration in painting. The movement lasted a total of two decades during the 1950's and 1960's.
