Joueur de Diaule et Couple Au Bord de la Mer, from the 347 series. Etching and aquatint on BFK Rives wove paper. Signed and numbered in pencil. Printed by Atelier Crommelynck, published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris, Image size: 31.8 by 47 cm / 12.6 by 18.5 in. References: Bloch 1396; BA. 1421. 'Le Joueur de Diaule' by Pablo Picasso is an etching measuring 45 × 62 cm. Against a field of dense cross-hatching and deep black ink, three loosely rendered figures occupy a horizontal composition: a reclining nude at left, a standing figure behind, and a seated figure at right who appears to be playing a double flute — the diaulos of the title. Picasso's line work is rapid and layered, with areas of bright white paper left exposed against the surrounding darkness. The print bears his hand-written signature below the image, along with an edition number at the lower left. The work belongs to Picasso's extensive printmaking output, a medium he returned to throughout his career, using the etching needle with the same improvisational energy visible in his drawings. The mythological subject — the diaulos is an ancient Greek instrument — connects to his recurring interest in classical antiquity filtered through a distinctly modern graphic language.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
