Screenprint in colours with silver ink // Miles Aldridge’s Venus Etcetera (after Velázquez), a limited edition screen-print from 2022, presents a contemporary twist on classical themes of beauty and femininity. The composition features a blonde woman in lingerie, posed in a stylized, hyper-feminine setting with vibrant colors. With a blow dryer in hand, she sits in front of a vanity surrounded by flowers, playing cards, and other objects that evoke a sense of modern glamour intertwined with chaos. The playful yet provocative setup reflects Aldridge’s signature style, combining pop art aesthetics with surrealism. The silver ink enhances the composition, adding a reflective quality to the already vibrant print.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
