The Acrobats (1984) by Marc Chagall captures the whimsical chaos and poetic energy of the circus, a recurring theme in the artist’s work. Rendered in vibrant lithographic color, this composition teems with dynamic figures in mid-air, performing gravity-defying feats over a densely packed audience. A central strongman in blue anchors the composition, lifting another acrobat with ease, while surrounding performers twist, leap, and balance in expressive, childlike forms. The layering of movement and expression evokes Chagall’s lifelong fascination with fantasy, memory, and performance. This limited edition of 50 exemplifies Chagall’s masterful integration of dreamlike imagery with technical lithographic precision.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
