Josué devant Jericho (Joshua Before Jericho) is a hand-colored etching by Marc Chagall, created between 1931 and 1939 as part of his monumental La Bible series. This composition captures the moment of divine command as Joshua prepares to lead the Israelites into battle. A powerful angel with vivid purple wings hovers above, symbolizing divine guidance. Joshua stands in the foreground, sword in hand, his face and limbs highlighted in yellow, addressing the multitude behind him. Chagall’s ethereal use of color and expressive line lends the scene a sense of reverence and otherworldly vision, blending biblical narrative with mystical intensity

What is avant-garde?

Avant-garde refers to innovative and experimental ideas in the arts that challenge established norms and conventions. Originating from the French term for advance guard, it describes both the movement and the artists who push the boundaries of creativity, often exploring new techniques, forms, and concepts. The avant-garde has been a driving force in various art movements throughout history, such as Dadaism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism, continually reshaping the landscape of art and culture.
