Color etching and aquatint on Japon Impérial paper. Signed and numbered in pencil, from the same-titled portfolio. Printed by Lacourière and Frélaut, Paris. Published by Maeght, Paris, Plate 15 5/8 x 11 3/4 inches; 39.7 x 29.8 cm. Sheet 18 1/2 x 14 3/8 inches; 47 x 36.5 cm. Literature: Cramer books 99. Celui qui dit les choses sans rien dire by Marc Chagall is a 1975 color etching and aquatint, printed on delicate Japon Impérial paper and measuring 397 x 298 mm (plate) and 470 x 365 mm (sheet). This impression is signed and numbered from a limited edition of 25 and originates from the portfolio of the same title, printed by Lacourière and Frélaut and published by Maeght in Paris. The composition captures a serene artist’s studio where a figure, possibly Chagall himself, sits before an easel bearing a floral still life. Beyond the large window, a verdant landscape glows under a soft blue sky. Chagall’s poetic, dreamlike lines and dappled colors give the scene a quiet introspection, blurring the boundary between artist, model, and memory. This work reflects the introspective and lyrical tone characteristic of Chagall’s later years.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
