Etching and collage. Numbered and signed in pencil by the artist. Reina Mariana (2008) by Manolo Valdés is an etching and collage that reflects the artist’s ongoing dialogue with classical Spanish painting, particularly the works of Diego Velázquez. Valdés frequently reinterprets Velázquez’s iconic portraits, transforming historical figures into bold, modern compositions. The figure depicted refers to the famous portrait of Mariana of Austria, best known through Velázquez’s royal paintings. In Valdés’s reinterpretation, the queen’s elaborate dress and recognizable silhouette remain intact, yet the facial features are deliberately simplified, leaving the face blank and anonymous. The work juxtaposes historical imagery with elements of contemporary popular culture. A striking collage of repeated portraits of Marilyn Monroe appears within the folds of the dress, creating a visual dialogue between classical royal portraiture and modern celebrity culture. This contrast highlights Valdés’s exploration of identity, fame, and the shifting nature of cultural icons across centuries. Through textured etching lines and layered collage elements, Valdés combines tradition and modernity, paying homage to Spanish art history while reimagining it within a contemporary visual language.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
