Etching with collage // Untitled 2 (Alfombra) by Liliana Porter, created in 2023, is a limited edition etching with collage that highlights Porter's signature approach to minimalism and surreal storytelling. The piece measures 50.5 x 38.5 cm and features a small figure standing below a simple, hand-drawn rectangular frame. The figure appears to be engaged in an action that creates small marks or debris on the surface below, suggesting an act of creation or disruption. The minimalist composition, dominated by negative space, draws the viewer's attention to the small details and the figure’s solitary presence, evoking themes of human endeavor, fragility, and the passage of time. The collage adds texture, making the figure and its activity feel immediate and tangible. Limited to a series of 20, this work continues Porter’s exploration of human interactions with the abstract and the mundane.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
