Photoetching with collage on super Alfa paper // To Paint Black (Mod. 2) by Liliana Porter is a minimalist etching with collage, created in 2019. This piece captures Porter's distinctive blend of humor and introspection. Set against a vast, nearly blank background, a tiny figure appears to be painting a trail of black ink droplets that rise diagonally across the composition. The small scale of the figure contrasts sharply with the expanse of negative space, creating a sense of isolation and contemplation. Porter's work often explores themes of existence, labor, and the absurdity of human endeavors. Here, the act of painting becomes a symbolic journey, with the figure's modest task evoking both simplicity and profundity.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
