// Shit by Liliana Porter is a limited edition etching from 2005, produced in an edition of 50. This minimalist artwork presents a simple, almost childlike line drawing of a creature resembling a deer or a toy animal, rendered with a few clean, unembellished lines. To the right of the figure, a small dot or mark contrasts against the blank space, adding a subtle element of intrigue and humor. Porter’s sparse composition, with its playful and ambiguous title, invites viewers to ponder the meaning and narrative possibilities within such a minimal scene. The simplicity and whimsy suggest themes of innocence, absurdity, and the unexpected associations that can arise from even the most basic visual elements.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
